About the
PROJECT
Kuta Art Residency is an educational residency program, that converges emerging artists from remote communities around Nigeria in Ogun state. This in-person residency program provides a safe space, and art materials among other educational resources to participating artists.
Furthermore, the resident artists connect with established artists who guide them as they develop their work significantly and thematically over the course of 4-12 weeks.
The program rounds up with art exhibitions and public symposiums in Ogun state & other neighboring state(s) in southwest Nigeria.
This initiative is crucial to revive engagement in our local cultural centers and to place youths as the force for reactivating cultural expression, presenting contemporary works whilst connecting them to historical contexts, and urgent subjects in our society while collectively imagining and innovating a better future.
A goal of this program is to foster cultural exchange between the artists-in-residence and the facilitating artists, curators, and cultural producers. Furthermore, through public programs and monthly Kuta community events, the artists present their ideas and engage a wider audience through dialogue and other interactive sessions.
In the foreseeable future, the works of art produced in this residency program transcend the borders of Ogun state, Nigeria and the African continent. These works feature in global art shows and are collected by art museums, institutions and individuals, with interest in contemporary art by African artists. Furthermore, this is broadening the exchange field for cultural expression and giving center stage to artists who value indigenous artistic heritage / native aesthetics and cultural producers who preserve it by working with local art institutions like Kuta Arts Foundation.
